Tempelhof is the biggest open green space in the middle of the city of Berlin.

Here the sky, expanse and freedom seem limitless. When Tempelhofer Feld was opened to everyone in 2010 it gave Berlin another unique feature – one of the world’s biggest inner-city green spaces. Where once planes took off from West Berlin for destinations all over the world, there is now over 300 hectares of green space for skating, strolling, gardening, picnicking, bird watching, kite-surfing and much more.

The field’s freedom is inspiring, as 19 projects prove. Various initiatives have successfully experimented with artistic, gardening and social ideas for its use and created a broad range of activities and programmes.

The involvement of Berliners was essential to the project. In 2014 Berlin’s population decided in a referendum not to allow construction on the edge of Tempelhofer Feld and to keep it in its current condition.

Tempelhofer Feld is a refuge for many plants and animals. Its size, and open, warm dry environment means that it can play an important role in the conservation of species found here.

The park’s spacious, partially natural grasslands are one of the most significant habitats in Berlin for bird species that are endangered in Germany.

Since 2011 a range of cultural and social projects provided by committed citizens, initiatives and organisations have complemented Tempelhofer Feld’s array of recreational activities in various ways.

In a two-phase process around 38 projects in areas such as gardening, education, art and culture, sport and the neighbourhood were selected from around 270 applications.
