Live from Berlin

What is it like to live and work in the Hauptstadt? A Canadian designer’s unique perspective on finding work and having fun in Berlin.

Shocking news:

I have been told, for the first time ever, that my design ideas are 'undemocratic.'

*stares*

Things that are not allowed in the competition in Nürnberg:

  • Any kind of levels (reminder of Nazism...)
  • Any kind of green space (too un-historic)
  • Trees (there were never any trees in the square for the last 800 years so therefore it would be a terrible idea to introduce them now)
  • Any kind of new lighting concepts (too distracting)
  • Permeable pavings (too confusing on the ground)
  • Green facades (THEY'VE WON PRIZES FOR THEIR RECONSTRUCTION AND IT WOULD BE SACRILEGE TO DEFACE THE WERY EXCELLENT 50'S BUILDINGS WITH GREENERY)

So I'm kinda at a loss as to what ideas are allowed. So far there has been a great discussion on changing the drainage of the market square and possibly removing some parking from the side streets. And maybe moving a bus stop by one or two meters in either direction.

Not really a competition winning concept, in my opinion, but Jed and I have decided that ideas are not allowed here because they are afraid it could lead to fascism.

My task for next week: figuring out how to re-use all of the existing "historic" (i.e, circa 1965) paving stones without adding any new shapes or sizes of paving stones.

sigh.

At least I have good music to listen to.

Out this week: Lana Del Rey [GO LISTEN NOW]
